Tension in Czech politics. The ANO and SPD parties are demanding quick approval of the government

The ANO and SPD movements and the Motoristi sebe party would like the vote of confidence in the new Czech government to take place in the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic on January 13. This was said by the chairman of the Chamber of Deputies and the head of the SPD movement, Tomio Okamura, after the meeting of the leaders of the emerging government cabinet at the headquarters of the ANO movement in Prague’s Chodov district, reports the TASR correspondent in Prague.

  • The ANO and SPD movements are planning a vote of confidence in the government.
  • The chairman of the SPD informed about the preparations in the parliament for the meeting.
  • The government could be appointed in mid-December.
  • They plan to reject the EU migration pact and emission allowances.
  • The SPD movement wants to reduce the number of subcommittees of the lower house.

“We would like to do the vote of confidence on January 13. We expect it to be longer, usually until the next day. So I am now going back to the Chamber of Deputies and I will inform the apparatus to prepare steps in this direction so that we can prepare,” said Okamura.

Waiting for an appointment

Karel Havlíček, vice-chairman of the ANO movement, added that the entire government could be appointed on December 15 or 16. However, according to him, it is not certain yet, because the president has not yet officially announced it to them. “It could really happen on Monday or Tuesday. We have to be ready for all variants,” he added. The parties also agreed that immediately after the appointment of the government, the cabinet will meet at the first organizational meeting, and then the next day, the first regular meeting of the government will take place.

“We don’t want to delay anything for even a single day, and you can see that we are not taking any time off. We want the government to sit down a few hours after the appointment of the government by the president and clearly tell people that we have not been looking out of the window here for the past few months and that what we have prepared will also be carried out,” emphasized Havlíček.

Government plans

Okamura specified that at the first regular meeting the government wants to reject the EU migration pact and also the implementation of ETS2 emission permits. “During my visit to Slovakia this week, I also secured a supporting position from the Slovak Republic, which means a common approach towards Brussels,” the head of the chamber pointed out. At the same time, he announced that he wants the number of subcommittees in the lower house to be reduced, thereby saving public money.

To questions about SPD’s nominee for Defense Minister Jaromír Zůn and his statement on Thursday that Russia can be described as a threat, Okamura responded that all ministerial candidates will strictly follow the government’s manifesto, in which neither Russia nor Ukraine are named. “As for the Czech ammunition initiative, we do not want to continue it with Czech money, that has already been clearly stated,” he emphasized. He expects Zůna to fulfill the program and reminded that all ministerial candidates are co-authors of those parts of the government’s program statement that relate to their departments.
