US President Donald Trump together with the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame signed a peace agreement. On the territory of the DRC, fighting continues between the army and rebels from the March 23 Movement supported by Rwanda. TASR writes about it according to the AFP agency.
“I think it will be a real miracle,” Trump told reporters after signing the deal. They spent a lot of time killing each other and now they’re going to spend a lot of time hugging each other, holding hands and use the United States of America economically, as all other countries do,” he declared on behalf of both countries.
Tshisekedi and Kagame, unlike Trump, chose a more cautious tone. “There are ups and downs along the way, no doubt about it,” said the Rwandan president. Tshisekedi called the signing of the agreement “the beginning of a new, challenging journey.” The long-running conflict in eastern DRC escalated earlier this year when M23 captured the major cities of Goma and Bukavu in South Kivu province.
USA and Qatar in June they brokered a truce between the warring parties and according to Trump, the conflict is one of eight he has managed to resolve since taking office. AFP reminds that ceasefire violations regularly occur in the DRC, and fighting in the east of the country continued even on the day the treaty was signed.
