Avalanche threat in Slovakia: Rain and warming increase the risk in the mountains above the forest zone

A slight avalanche danger, the second degree from the five-part international scale, applies on Saturday in all Slovak mountains above the forest zone. The Avalanche Prevention Center of the Mountain Rescue Service (SLP HZS) informed about it.

Rain and snow are expected in Mala and Veľká Fatra on Saturday, so it will be wet and heavy. “In the northern sectors, where powdery snow has been maintained, a decrease in the strength of the snow cover and the probability of small and medium-sized avalanches are expected,” said SLP.

It pointed out that the risk of avalanches also exists in the Tatras due to warming and rain, especially in places where powdery snow was maintained the previous days. “It will gradually become heavier and small and medium-sized avalanches will form. This is mainly the northern sector up to an altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level. In the highest locations, due to the strong south wind, wind-blown slabs and pillows will form,” added SLP.
