The announcement by the senator (-RJ) that he was chosen by the former president (PL) as in next year’s elections was received with skepticism by the family’s allies and opponents.
Critics and supporters agree that this is a bluff, but they give different reasons. They are betting on a future withdrawal of the candidacy in favor of (Republicanos-SP) or some other right-wing representative.
For supporters, Bolsonaro launched his son with the aim of strengthening the family name at a time of lows. The former president is imprisoned at the Federal Police Superintendence, in Brasília, convicted of an attempted coup d’état.
In this scenario, for his critics, Bolsonaro would have considered it important to highlight someone in his family, carrying his surname, to stop the loss of political capital while he is in prison.
For the latter, his allies, the former president would have announced his son’s name as a way of empowering him in the face of former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, with whom he had clashes last week.
Michelle criticized deputy André Fernandes (PL) for forming an alliance with Ciro Gomes (PSDB) in Ceará, and Flávio reacted, saying that she had addressed the parliamentarian in an “authoritarian and embarrassing” way.
To maintain political control of the family with his children, Bolsonaro would have planned to make Flávio official as his representative in next year’s elections.
The skepticism with which the nomination was received by allies and opponents is related to what they see as weaknesses in the senator’s candidacy.
