I wanted to do “something important”: elderly man receives million-dollar inheritance and uses it to rebuild the village church

“If I had a decent pension I was not working”: after income there are 10 € to this 77 -year -old retired

The case of Raymond Landy has generated widespread curiosity in France after the elderly farmer, now 92 years old, decided to use the millionaire inheritance left by his brother to rebuild the church in his native village, La Chapelle-sur-Aveyron, in the Loiret department, south of Paris. The story was told by public television France 3 and detailed by media outlets such as the Spanish newspaper ABC, which reported the astonishment of local authorities, used to dealing with strong financial constraints in preserving the historic building.

The story gained prominence due to the way in which a man who lived almost his entire life in anonymity decided to channel such a large amount of money into a community project. According to these publications, the village is small and the church represents the main symbol of the territory, functioning as a cultural and social reference point for several generations.

A simple life and a deep connection to the place

Raymond grew up on the same piece of land where he always worked and lived with his brother. Both dedicated their lives to agriculture and remained in the same house for decades, without either having started a family. According to the French and Spanish press, they were known for their discretion and the way they participated in local life without seeking prominence.

The Frenchman explained that he was born, baptized and took communion in that church. For him, the building represents an essential part of the village’s collective memory. Over the years, the temple entered a marked state of deterioration, with structural problems and the risk of interior elements falling, a situation that the municipality did not have the financial capacity to resolve due to the reduced budget and limited public subsidies.

The legacy that unlocked decades of impasse

The death of his brother, in 2022, unexpectedly changed the fate of that heritage. Raymond received more than one million euros in inheritance and, according to , decided to use that money “to do something important”: donate more than one million euros to the commune to finance the rehabilitation of the church. In total, the donation amounts to around 1.38 million euros, divided into several phases, an amount that covers practically the entire cost of the works.

The municipality had already tried for years to obtain funds to start the work, but the estimated costs were far beyond the annual municipal budget. Raymond’s donation finally made it possible to move forward with a complete restoration plan, which includes the recovery of the structure, interventions on the roof and nave and the preservation of the most fragile historical elements.

The choices made by Raymond have parallels in Portugal with regard to the legal framework for inheritances and donations. In light of the Portuguese Civil Code, heirs may, as a rule, freely dispose of assets received by succession, as long as they respect the rights of legitimate heirs, such as the spouse, descendants and ascendants, defined in article 2157 et seq.

In the case of donations, article 940 establishes that any person with legal capacity may donate part or all of their assets, in a spirit of liberality and at the expense of their assets, as long as it does not harm the rights of family members protected by law and the applicable legal formalities are complied with. As happened in France, in Portugal an heir can, within these limits, allocate an inheritance to community projects or works of public interest, including the rehabilitation of religious heritage.

The village gained a new lease of life

With financing secured, restoration work was finally launched. Residents and mayors describe the gesture as a rare act of gratitude towards the land that welcomed the family throughout their lives. For many residents, the renovation of the church not only preserves the main symbol of the village, but could also help keep the community alive and attract more people to local celebrations and activities.

The impact of a gesture that did not seek recognition

Raymond Landy remains discreet and shows no interest in protagonism. According to the Spanish press, he simply said that he wanted to do “something important” for his people and that the money should serve a greater purpose than himself. The plaque placed on the facade of the church records the contribution of the two brothers, but the benefactor continues to live in a nursing home, monitored from a distance as the works progress.

The reconstruction of the church is taking place in phases: after work begins on the bell tower, interventions will follow on the choir, the roof and the structure of the nave, with the main works planned over the next few months. For the small French village, the project marks a new chapter in the history of a heritage that, for years, has deteriorated with no solution in sight and that now gains a new opportunity thanks to the decision of a single inhabitant.
