When listed buildings fall into the hands of real estate developers with megalomania and horrible parvenu tastes, then things are bad for the monument in question. Donald Trump (six real estate bankruptcies) not only decorated the Oval Office in the White House with all sorts of gold decorations that make your eyes pop, but he also had the east wing of the White House demolished in order to build a (golden) ballroom there. But the original architect has now resigned because the ballroom in the Trumpomania version would overshadow the White House. Trump immediately appointed a willing helper.
