Director of “Marty Supreme”, Josh Safdie revealed Brazilian inspirations for his own work. He attended CCXP25this Friday (5), alongside Timothée Chalametstar of the new film.
“’Cidade de Deus’ and ‘Pixote’ inspired me as a director”, he declared, on the event’s Thunder stage.
“City of God”, from 2002, was directed by Fernando Meirelles. “Pixote, the Law of the Weakest” was released in 1980, directed by Héctor Babenco.
“These are filmmakers who understand that being a filmmaker has nothing to do with fame,” said Safdie.
Speaking about Brazilian energy, he said: “It’s incredible to see your passion and see what you’re doing for the film.”
“’Marty Supreme’ is about the urgency of when no one else believes in your dream and if you don’t believe in it, the world will destroy your dream.”
The plot is inspired by the true story of the multi-award winning table tennis player Marty Reisman, notorious gambler who became the oldest athlete to win a national championship in a racket sport.
The film is set in New York, in the United States, in the 1950s, a time when the athlete, nicknamed “Needle”, had some of his greatest achievements.
Although the film has not yet been released, special screenings were held for journalists and members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The title entered the list of best films of 2025 in The New York Times and Chalamet is tipped for an Oscar for Best Actor, potentially receiving his third nomination.
