Minimum wage of 1500 euros? Carneiro talks about Montenegro’s “carrot after the axe”

Luis Montenegro welcomes José Luis Carneiro

The socialist leader believes that Montenegro’s suggestion to increase the minimum wage is nothing more than a tactic to try to stop the general strike.

The secretary general of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, today accused the prime minister of being “throw a carrot” to workers when talking about increasing the minimum wage to 1500 euros, in an attempt to empty the content of the general strike.

“This throwing the carrot after an ax that is given to workers is a technique that I think no one believes in”, said José Luís Carneiro, at the entrance to a session paying homage to the oldest PS/Aveiro activists, which took place this evening at the Aveiro Congress Center.

The socialist leader responded in this way to the Prime Minister who today, in Ovar, insisted that this is the time to move forward with labor reform, questioning why not take advantage of this opportunity to go “a little further”, giving as an example the increase in the minimum wage from 920 to 1500 euros.

José Luís Carneiro said he has no doubt that these statements are “an attempt to empty the content of the general strike“, which is scheduled for Thursday, stating that he is convinced that workers “are also very aware of what are diversionary maneuvers on the part of members of the Government”.

The socialist leader also emphasized that there had not been a general strike for 12 years, stating that what the Government achieved with these proposals was “break social peacewhich is essential for the economy to continue to grow and continue to create jobs”.

“There are independent unions, there are unions of social democratic workers, of the PPD, there are workers who are linked to the Socialist Party and everyone, from different currents, showed their willingness to go on strike and therefore this is very significant”, he noted.

He also insisted that nothing justifies the Government having advanced with “so disruptive” political optionsadding that the country is “practically at full employment and the economy is growing”, and recalled that the last review of labor laws took place just two years ago, with the PSD’s contribution to the final solution of the Decent Work Agenda.
