Petrobras announces deliveries of the first SAF produced in Brazil

The initial volume, of 3 thousand cubic meters (m³), of the so-called SAF (sustainable aviation fuel), the first produced entirely in Brazil, was commercialized with distributors operating at Tom Jobim International Airport, in Rio de Janeiro.

The amount is equivalent to approximately one day of total consumption at the state’s airports. The announcement was made on Friday (5) by Petrobras.

SAF can replace traditional aviation kerosene without adjustments to aircraft or fueling infrastructure, allowing for immediate industry adoption. According to the state-owned company, the solution could be one of the fastest ways to reduce pollutant emissions from global aviation.

The sustainable fuel is produced by co-processing at Petrobras’ refining park, informed the president of the state-owned company. For Magda Chambriard, this is a solution that contributes to meeting the airline sector’s decarbonization goals, highlighting the initiative as strategic.

“It is a competitive product, which meets rigorous international aviation standards. We are offering the national market the possibility of meeting global demands”, added the president of Petrobras.

International flights

From 2027 onwards, Brazilian airlines must use SAF on international flights, in accordance with the rules of the Corsia program, run by Icao (International Civil Aviation Organization). On domestic flights, use will be progressively required by the Future Fuel Law.

The SAF launched by the company is ISCC-Corsia certified, which provides the seal of sustainability and traceability. The fuel uses a percentage of vegetable raw material, such as TCO (technical corn oil) or soybean oil, processed together with fossil-based kerosene.

According to Petrobras, the renewable portion can reduce net CO₂ emissions by up to 87%. Despite the different origin, the final product is chemically identical to conventional kerosene in terms of operational safety, guarantees the state-owned company.

The first shipments were produced at Reduc (Duque de Caxias Refinery), in Baixada Fluminense, certified for SAF production and marketing.

The ANP (National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels) authorizes Reduc to incorporate up to 1.2% of renewable raw material in the current co-processing route.

Petrobras plans to expand production: Revap (Henrique Lage Refinery), in São José dos Campos, in São Paulo, has already carried out tests, and Replan (Paulínia Refinery), also in São Paulo, and Regap (Gabriel Passos Refinery), in Minas Gerais, are expected to begin commercial activities in 2026.
