Russian adviser highlights new dynamics in US-Russia talks

The Kremlin adviser appreciates the friendly tone of Putin’s negotiations with the US envoy. Kushner contributes a systematic element to the plan to end the war in Ukraine.

The Kremlin’s top foreign policy adviser said on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Ambassador Steve Witkoff had reached a level of understanding where their talks had become “genuinely friendly”. It was reported by the AFP agency.

Yuri Ushakov also said the inclusion of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, in Tuesday’s Kremlin talks brought a “systematic element” to the talks. Kushner, he said, will likely be the one to “put down on paper” much of the plan to end the war in Ukraine if it continues to be worked on.

Constructive tone of conversations

“I would say the tone… was constructive and friendly,” Ushakov told Russian state television during Putin’s visit to India. “Putin knows Witkoff well, he met him six times. And their conversations are really friendly. They understand each other without having to say anything,” he added.

Putin held talks with Witkoff and Kushner in the Kremlin for five hours about a US-backed plan to end the war in Ukraine, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022. The Russian leader later described the talks as “very useful”.

Kushner’s involvement unclear

Witkoff met with Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov in Florida on Thursday and will hold talks with him again on Friday, a source familiar with the matter said. It is not clear whether Kushner is also participating in the meetings with Umerov.
