Causes of the fire are not yet known

At least 23 people died in a fire this evening at a nightclub in Goa, India, Governor Pramod Sawant announced.

“Today is a very painful day for all of us in Goa. A huge fire in Arpora killed 23 people,” Sawant wrote in a post on the social network X, expressing “deep consternation” over the incident.

Among the fatalities were “three or four tourists”, said Sawant, quoted by AFP, when he visited the site.

The governor ordered an investigation to determine “the exact cause of the fire” and whether the establishment was complying with “fire safety standards and building regulations”.

“Those responsible will face the most severe punishments provided by law – any negligence will be dealt with rigorously”, he assured.
