If you want to do a doctorate in Austria, you have to go to a university. Universities of Applied Sciences (FH) do not yet have the right to award doctorates – a fact that has been hotly debated for years. A few weeks ago, the debate escalated again: the universities of applied sciences in Vorarlberg and St. Pölten rushed forward with a concept for a joint doctoral program and called for the creation of the legal framework for implementation. The universities, in turn, criticized what they saw as the “misplaced campaign” and pointed to the tense economic situation in the country.
