The Greek coast guard announced on Saturday that it had discovered an unmanageable boat off the coast of Crete with 18 dead migrants on board. Of the entire crew, only two people survived. TASR writes about it according to the DPA agency. The survivors explained to rescuers that they had lost control of the ship during the storm. The crew thus found themselves on the open sea without water, food and adequate shelter.

Investigators are now trying to find out what exactly happened on board. In recent days, the sea around Crete was hit by a strong storm with a wind speed of more than 90 kilometers per hour. According to the Coast Guard, 18 people on board had been dead for more than a day. It is not yet clear from which country the migrants came.
Crete is a frequent destination for African migrants heading to Europe. The smugglers often take them to the island via a dangerous route from Tobruk, Libya. 17,000 of them arrived on the island since the beginning of the year.
