Russia welcomes the changes in the US national security strategy, saying the adjustments represent a radical departure from Washington’s previous policy and are “largely in line” with Moscow’s vision. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this in an interview with Rossiya 1 television on Sunday, quoted by AFP.
“The adjustments we’re seeing are very much in line with our vision,” Peskov said. “Maybe we can hope that we will be able to constructively continue our joint work to find a peaceful solution in Ukraine.”
At the same time, Peskov pointed out that the new concept of the American security strategy is encouraging, but one must be careful. “When everything is written very beautifully and conceptually, what they call the deep state can do things differently. So we have to watch very carefully how this concept is implemented.”
The Kremlin spokesman reacted to the new national security strategy published in the US this week, which outlines Washington’s key priorities in the world. Donald Trump’s administration unveiled a new national security strategy on Friday. It is a document that US presidents usually issue once per election period.
The new strategy marks a significant shift from universal American interventionism to a more pragmatic approach subordinated to national interests: The US will focus more on domestic politics, technological and economic power, and defense.
The document envisages investments in armaments, modernization of the nuclear arsenal, hypersonic weapons, cyber and space warfare. In it, the US prioritizes the protection of its own borders and reduces the ambition to intervene everywhere in the world.
The strategy also envisages a reassessment of relations with Europe – the document criticizes some trends in Europe, incl migration policy, regulations or issues of freedom of speech, and expects a smaller commitment from the US against certain foreign obligations.
