The soldier Kelvin Barros da Silva21 years old, and murdered Maria de Lourdes Freire Matos25, were part of the 1st Guards Cavalry Regiment (RCG) of the Federal District, a unit that guards the facilities of the Presidency of the Republic.
According to information from the Army, Silva confessed to the murder and is being held in the Brasília Army Police Battalion. He will answer in court for the crimes of femicide, firearm theft, arson and procedural fraud.
Created in 1808 and known as Dragons of Independence1st RCG is the oldest cavalry in Brazil still active.
The unit expressed its “deep regret” on its Instagram profile for the murder of the corporal and stated that her career at the institution was “marked by dedication, professionalism and an exemplary commitment to the service provided at Fanfarra”.
The victim was a saxophonist in the regiment’s band, which also performs the military ceremonial.
In a statement, the Brazilian Army said it provided “full support to the family” and “deeply regrets the loss of the Corporal”, reaffirming “it does not accept criminal acts and severely punishes those responsible”.
Exclusion from the Armed Forces
The crime that occurred on Friday (5) allegedly took place during an argument, in which the soldier stabbed the victim in the neck with a knife and then set the place on fire, according to information from the DF Civil Police.
The Army Social Communication Center states that a Military Police Inquiry was launched to clarify the circumstances of the fire and death of Maria de Lourdes Freire Matos.
According to the institution, the soldier must “be excluded from the ranks of the Force and held responsible for the act committed.”
