People in Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate must leave the coast immediately due to forecast waves of up to three meters
A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.6 shook the north and east coast of this Monday (8), at 11:15 pm (local time). The Japan Meteorological Agency issued urgent evacuation warnings for three prefectures due to imminent tsunami risk.
According to the Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the tremor was located at sea, 80 kilometers from the city of Misawa, in the Aomori region. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 50 kilometers, and in the city of Hachinohe, also in Aomori, an intensity level of 6 on the Japanese scale was recorded.
Authorities project the arrival of waves up to three meters high in the coming hours. The alert covers the regions of:
– Hokkaido;
– Aomori;
– Iwate;
The official recommendation is that residents of these areas evacuate immediately to higher, safer locations.
