Datafolha: 54% think Bolsonaro wanted to escape; 33% believe in an outbreak

The majority of Brazilians believe that former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was trying to escape when he damaged his electronic ankle bracelet, according to the Datafolha survey.

To 54% of those interviewed, Bolsonaro was preparing an escapewhile 33% agree with the version presented by the defensethat he was in a paranoid outbreak. Others 13% did not know how to give their opinion.

The survey heard 2,002 voters in 113 municipalities between December 2nd and 4ththe. The margin of error is two percentage points, more or less.

Among Brazilian states, the The Northeast is the one that most bets on the hypothesis of an escape attempt, with the support of 61% of those interviewed.

Nas South, North and Central-West regions, 40% believe that the former president was going through an outbreak at the time he damaged the equipment.

Among voters, 66% of those who voted for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) no second shift of 2022 argue that Bolsonaro was trying to escapewhile 66% of the former president’s voters defended the version presented by the defense.

Among young people, aged 16 to 24, 60% say that their ankle bracelet was damaged to facilitate a possible escape. For 40% of the rich, the version of the paranoid outbreak is true and 46% of evangelicals also defend this hypothesis.

STF’s view

The decision that ordered Bolsonaro’s preventive detention on November 22 alleges that the former president tried to break his ankle bracelet to “guarantee a successful escape.”

The arrest was requested by the PF itself and authorized by the minister Alexandre de Moraesfrom the STF (Supreme Federal Court).

According to the Supreme Court, Bolsonaro tried to take off his ankle bracelet around midnight.

Bolsonaro’s defense

The day after his preventive arrest, Bolsonaro explained, during custody hearingthe reasons that the led to violating the ankle bracelet.

Asked by the assistant judge from the minister’s office Alexandre de MoraesDra. Luciana Yuki Fugishita Sorrentinoregarding motivations, Bolsonaro explained that he had a “a certain paranoia” between Friday (21) and Saturday (22).

This would have happened due to medications they have been taking, prescribed by different doctors, and which interacted inappropriately. The former Chief Executive also said that he sleeps “chopped up” and doesn’t sleep well.

In his speech, he claimed that these factors led him, around midnight, to touch the ankle bracelet with a soldering iron, because he had a course in operating this type of equipment.

Afterwards, he mentioned that “having come to his senses” he stopped using solder, at which time he informed the prison officers who monitor his custody.
