EU calls for maximum restraint: Fighting between Thailand and Cambodia must stop

On Monday, the European Union called on both Thailand and Cambodia to “exercise maximum restraintafter renewed fighting in their disputed border and urgently called on both countriesto return to the suspended peace agreement. TASR informs according to the report of the AFP agency.

“The recent firefight between Cambodia and Thailand represents an escalation of hostilities,” said the spokeswoman of the diplomatic service of the Union. “The EU calls on both countries to exercise maximum restraint and return to the joint declaration signed on 26 October and the confidence-building measures set out therein,” added.

On Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on both countries to exercise restraint, writes AFP. Thailand launched airstrikes on neighboring Cambodia on Monday, killing at least one Thai soldier and four Cambodian civilians in the latest wave of armed clashes between them. Both sides blame each other for the resumption of fighting in the disputed border area.

The conflict stems from a long-standing dispute over borders drawn during French colonial rule in the areawith both sides claiming several temples located in the border area.
