Peruvian journalist Fernando Núñez was murdered while returning from a reporting trip. ANP calls for a thorough investigation of the case and points to a growing threat to freedom of the press.
Peruvian journalist Fernando Núñez, who was reporting on local cases of corruption, was killed by assassins while returning from a business trip. This was announced on Sunday by the National Association of Peruvian Journalists (ANP), TASR reports, according to an AFP report.
A reporter for digital station Kamila TV “was attacked by assassins while riding a bicycle with his brother” on Saturday, ANP said on social media. He died at the scene of the attack, his brother is in critical condition.
The third murdered journalist
In Peru, this is the third death of a journalist after the murders of editors Gastón Medina and Raúl Celis López in 2025. The ANP asks the investigators to consider primarily his journalistic work as a motive for the murder.
“(The latest incident) reveals an unacceptable escalation of violence against those exercising their right to information. Every person killed is not only a direct attack on journalism, but also on democracy and the right of citizens to be informed,” ANP declared.
Increasing crime
Violent crime is on the rise in Peru, with 1,888 murders reported this year through October, an increase of 13 percent compared to the same period in 2024. Organized crime and extortion-related murders are on the rise due to high levels of poverty and unemployment following the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as political instability and an increase in gang violence, reports AFP.
