Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó stated this in a post published on Facebook on Monday, the TASR correspondent in Budapest reports.
- Hungary and Turkey support negotiations to end the war.
- Both countries condemn attacks on oil pipelines and tankers.
- Hungary receives natural gas through the TurkStream gas pipeline.
- Leaders’ meeting strengthens energy security and cooperation.
- Budapest will be directly connected by flights to Turkish cities.
The head of Hungarian diplomacy in Istanbul emphasized that Turkey is a reliable and fair transit partner and that approximately eight billion cubic meters of natural gas will arrive in Hungary via the TurkStream gas pipeline this year. He added that they will also oppose the presentation of the energy supply issue as a political or ideological issue.
Energy cooperation
Szijjártó recalled that the first meeting of the Joint Consultative Mechanism of Turkey and Hungary took place in Istanbul on Monday, with the participation of foreign ministers, defense ministers, national security advisers and leaders of the defense industry companies of both countries.
According to the Hungarian minister, this format will raise security policy and energy cooperation between the two countries to a new level, with special emphasis on strengthening energy security.
Air transport and meeting of leaders
“We agreed in Washington that there is no legal obstacle to continue buying oil and natural gas from Russia in order to ensure energy supplies to our country. We agreed in Russia that oil and natural gas will be sent to us, and in Turkey they assured us that they will provide the route. Now we have to fight daily with Brussels and Kiev so that energy supplies to the country can continue without interruption in accordance with the agreement reached with Washington, Moscow and Ankara,” the MTI agency quoted Szijjártó’s statement.
The minister added that they will sign an agreement on air transport, thanks to which Budapest will be connected with the largest Turkish cities by 105 airlines a week, including a Wizz Air flight between Budapest and Ankara, which will be the first air connection between the capitals of Turkey and Hungary from next summer.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is also in Istanbul, who will hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to the 24.hu server, the prime minister stated that the goal of the meeting is to evaluate the European and Eurasian situation.
