Petro says bodies found at sea could be US bombing victims

The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, called this Sunday (7) for the opening of an investigation into the discovery of two bodies on the seashore in a town on the border with Venezuela and suggested that the deaths may have been caused by American bombing in the Caribbean.

On Thursday (4) the public television network RTVC reported the discovery of two bodies in that town and several others on the Venezuelan side, without specifying the number.

“I ask the Institute of Forensic Medicine to establish the identities (…). They could be killed by shelling at sea,” wrote Petro on the social network X. A police spokesperson confirmed to AFP that the bodies were found on a fishing beach in the department of La Guajira (north).

In October, Petro had already violated Colombian sovereignty and killed a fisherman during American military operations against drug trafficking in the Caribbean Sea.

According to him, Colombian Alejandro Carranza died in one of the attacks carried out by United States forces who, since August, have concentrated actions in Venezuela and in areas close to Colombia’s territorial waters.

At the time, United States President Donald Trump stated that Colombia would no longer receive American subsidies. In a publication on the social network Truth Social, he justified the measure by saying that the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, is a leader in drug trafficking, “who strongly encourages the massive production of drugs”. The head of the White House, however, did not present evidence regarding his accusations.

At the time, the Colombian president denied any link with drug trafficking and said he did not understand “the greed” that, according to him, defines capitalism.
