Police identify suspects of stealing works of art from the Mário de Andrade Library

The vehicle used in the escape was seized, and Interpol received an alert to prevent the 13 engravings by Portinari and Matisse from leaving the country

A identified the two suspects of stealing 13 works of art from the Mário de Andrade Library, which occurred on Sunday morning (7), in the center of . Although their identities were not revealed, authorities released this Monday (8) images of the two criminals captured by security cameras.

The investigation is conducted by the 1st Specialized Center for the Repression of Crimes and Miscellaneous Occurrences (Siege). According to the corporation, the vehicle used in the escape — a van parked on Rua João Adolfo — has already been located, seized and subjected to technical expertise. Efforts continue to recover the stolen material.

The crime happened around 10am. Two armed men invaded the place and took eight engravings by the Frenchman Henri Matisse, belonging to the book “Jazz”, and five by the Brazilian Candido Portinari, which illustrate a 1959 edition of “Menino de Engenho”.

The action was recorded by the Smart Sampa system, from São Paulo City Hall. The images show the pair walking and monitoring movement around the building before and after the crime.

To prevent the historical collection from leaving , City Hall contacted , requesting the inclusion of the works on the (International Police) alert list.
