Price shock in Budapest: The reader had to take a picture of the number for goulash, which will make your dolls fall over!

The Christmas atmosphere has already taken over not only Slovakian squares, but also the metropolises of our neighbors. Although domestic markets have their unmistakable charm, many Slovaks, especially those from the southern regions, are lured abroad every year. The most popular destinations traditionally include Vienna and Budapest, which promise a spectacular experience.

This year, our reader Ľubica decided to test the charm of the Hungarian capital for herself. She didn’t hesitate and headed straight for the popular Námestie svátého Štefana for the festive mood. If you are considering a similar trip, the Christmas town in the heart of Budapest is open for you until January 1, 2026. Visitors can look forward to more than a hundred stalls that offer a varied mix of original craft products and traditional delicacies.

Ľubica responded to our call and sent a tip to the editors. In Budapest, she took pictures of the prices for the most popular foods and drinks, you can view them in the PHOTO gallery. It is worth mentioning the goulash soup, for which a visitor to the markets will pay 5500 forints (more than 14 euros). A pulled pork sandwich costs 5,100 forints (more than 13 euros) and a hamburger costs 4,900 forints (almost 13 euros) at the same stand.

Almost everyone associates two favorite hot drinks with Christmas markets. One of the stands asks 4.40 euros for three dozen non-alcoholic punches and 7.90 euros for the alcoholic version in the same volume. The price of mulled wine is 3.80 euros for three deciliters. Visitors can also warm up with tea, which is only a few cents cheaper. It costs 3.6 euros.

A bonus of the Christmas markets is the light projection on the Basilica of St. Stephen. The facade of the historic building changes every half hour into a beautiful visual story accompanied by music. You can find a video of the light projection at the beginning of the article. In addition, there will be live concerts every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and during Advent Sundays, which will complete the perfect backdrop for shopping and dining.
