The representatives of the United States, Israel and Qatar met in New York on Sunday, said sources for the American news portal Axios. It happened a few months after an Israeli airstrike in the Qatari capital of Doha, targeting the leaders of the Palestinian militant movement Hamas. This was reported by the AFP agency, writes TASR.
- The United States, Israel and Qatar have been negotiating the implementation of the peace agreement.
- The meeting followed the Israeli attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar.
- Qatar was an important mediator of the agreement to end the war in Gaza.
- Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violating the peace terms.
- Qatar and Egypt propose to deploy international stabilization forces in Gaza.
According to two sources, it was the highest-level meeting between the three countries since the agreement to end the war in the Gaza Strip, in which Qatar was a key mediator. The White House did not immediately confirm the meeting to AFP.
Axios reported that White House envoy Steve Witkoff hosted Mossad intelligence director David Barnea and an unnamed Qatari official. The main topic was supposed to be the implementation of the peace agreement.
Qatar, along with Egypt and the US, helped broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, which remains fragile because both parties are accused of violating the agreed terms. On Saturday, Qatar and Egypt called for the withdrawal of Israeli troops and the deployment of international stabilization forces with the objective fully implement the agreement to end the conflict in Gaza.
The September 9 Israeli attack in Doha unsuccessfully targeted the chief negotiator and other Hamas officials. The raid claimed six lives and drew criticism from US President Donald Trump. Axios reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later called Qatari Prime Minister Muhammad bin Abdarrahman Al Sani from the White House at Trump’s urging to apologize for the attack.
