Tesla recorded the smallest deviations between announced and actual autonomy
The Australian Government has launched an initiative to protect consumers. The first results are anything but reassuring.
Independent range tests on electric cars have shown that none of the models tested can travel the distance announced by the manufacturer, according to results conducted by the Australian Automobile Association.
The conclusion places the real autonomy of electric vehicles at the center of purchasing decisions and the development of the sector itself, whose growth has been held back by the difficulty in mitigating the so-called “range anxiety”.
As part of the Australian government program, each vehicle undergoes a 93-kilometer route that combines urban sections, rural roads and highways around Geelong.
The objective is compare advertised performance with behavior in everyday use – a fundamental contrast to assess the real efficiency of each model and its ability to meet drivers’ expectations.
Among the set of vehicles analyzed, the Tesla has recorded the smallest deviation so far. The Model Y, approved for 466 kilometers, was 16 kilometers short in real driving. Although this difference is small compared to other models, the result confirms that the autonomy indicated in the official documentation was not achieved.
Much worse was the performance of the MG4which presented the largest variation detected: it was 124 kilometers down from 405 kilometers announced, a deviation of 31%.
There were also significant differences in the Let’s EV3which was 67 kilometers short of the approved value, and in Smart #1which missed the objective by 53 kilometers, which represents a drop of 13%.
The director general of the Australian Automobile Association, Michael Bradleyhighlights the usefulness of this data for anyone considering buying an electric car.
“These results give consumers an independent indication of actual range, meaning they now know which cars deliver as advertised and which don’t,” said Bradley, quoted by .
According to the association, having this type of measurements helpsreduce anxiety load-related and contributes to a safer and more reliable use of this type of vehicles.
The initiative, financed with federal funds and created following the emissions manipulation revealed in 2015 at Volkswagenhas already evaluated 140 of the 200 planned vehicles.
The project also detected that the most hybrid models and combustion consume more energy or fuel than indicated in the official files, reinforcing the importance of independent tests to guarantee transparency and reliability.
