He may withdraw from , according to statements by the US president’s eldest son at a conference on the Middle East.
In a lengthy indictment against the purpose of continuing hostilities in Ukraine, he also said that Ukraine’s “corrupt” rich have fled their country, leaving “those they considered the peasantry” to fight in the war.
According to the Guardian, Trump Jr. has no official role in his father’s administration, but is a key figure in the Maga movement. His intervention reflects the antipathy of some members of Trump’s team to the Ukrainian government and comes as Trump’s negotiating team pressures Kiev to cede territory.
Trump Jr. said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is prolonging the war because he knows he will never win an election if it ends.
He also criticized the EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaia Callas, saying that European sanctions are not working as they have only increased the price of oil, from which Russia can finance the war. He described the European plan as “waiting for Russia to go bankrupt – that’s not a plan”.
Still, he said, during the 2022 election campaign he met only three people who ranked the war in Ukraine as one of the top 10 issues. The danger of Venezuelan boats transporting the drug fentanyl to the US was, he said, “a much more clear and immediate danger than anything happening in Ukraine or Russia.”
Trump Jr. claimed, without providing evidence, that he had noticed this summer, during a day in Monaco, that 50 percent of supercars, such as Bugattis and Ferraris, had Ukrainian license plates. “Do you think they won these in Ukraine?” he asked.
“We hear all the rumors about what happens when we see that all the license plates in Monaco are Ukrainian […] the rich left and left what they considered the peasant class to fight these wars. There was no incentive for them to stop, because as long as the money was coming and they were stealing, nobody was controlling anything, so there was no reason for them to come in peace.”
When asked if it was possible that his father — who ran for office claiming he could bring peace to Ukraine — would simply walk away, Trump Jr. said he might, adding that his father is one of the most unpredictable people in politics. He promised that the US would no longer be “the idiot with the checkbook”.
