The names of the Minister of Finance, and the vice-president of the Republic, are being reinforced by leaders of the Workers’ Party as the main names on the left for the dispute for governor of São Paulo in 2026. The assessment, made after the announcement of Flávio Bolsonaro’s (PL) pre-candidacy for the Palácio do Planalto, reinforces the possibility that the current governor, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), will run for reelection to the Palácio dos Bandeirantes.

The understanding is that, to beat Tarcísio, candidates with already strong names in the state are needed, as the head of the São Paulo Executive has good evaluation and approval. Geraldo Alckmin, who has been governor of the State four times, is viewed favorably precisely because of this strength; Haddad, on the other hand, is read as a more symbolic representative of the political spectrum. Both, however, have already signaled that they would like to remain in their current positions – in the case of Alckmin – or have denied their desire to run in São Paulo, like the minister. Despite having lost the race to Tarcísio himself, the difference in the second round between the two, 55.27% for Tarcísio versus 44.73% for Haddad, in 2022, is seen as small.

For the PT leader in Antônio Donato, “by March, a lot can happen”. His assessment, however, is that Flávio’s pre-candidacy “is for real”, and, therefore, it is important “to have a strong ticket in São Paulo.

As for Paulo Fiorilo, also a member of the party and sometimes leader of the party in the House, “Haddad and Alckmin are two big names in the dispute, with real chances of victory. Our two names have a lot of good things to show.”

He signals, however, that the national scenario is not yet fully defined. “The candidate’s statement [Flavio] Bolsonaro yesterday signaled possible changes. There will be great pressure from the market, from center-right parties to change the candidate [à Presidencia]he states. “Today, Haddad is the most popular name for the dispute. But we need to wait for 2026 to arrive and the choices to materialize.”

As the column showed, the surroundings of . On Sunday, the senator stated that there would be a “price” for him to withdraw his candidacy.
