Where to watch the 2025 Women’s Handball World Cup?
The competition is being broadcast on SportTV (closed TV and Globoplay), XSports (open TV) on Cazé TV (Youtube) for all of Brazil.
History of the Women’s Handball World Cup
The Women’s World Handball Championship had its first edition in 1957, still in a reduced format and dominated by teams from Eastern Europe, especially the former Soviet Union and Hungary. Over the following decades, the tournament grew in scope, number of participants and importance within the international sporting scene, also following the expansion and professionalization of women’s handball around the world.
The turn of the 1990s marked a significant change in the balance of forces. Norway emerged as a power, revolutionizing the sport with a faster, more physical and modern style of play, accumulating titles and leading historic rivalries with France, Russia and Denmark. The tournament started to attract more and more attention, driven by global broadcasts and the consolidation of handball as an Olympic sport since 1976 (women’s edition).
In recent years, the World Cup has consolidated itself as the great showcase for women’s handball, revealing talents, establishing new hegemonies and increasing competitiveness. France, Norway and the Netherlands alternated at the top, while countries outside the European axis began to show consistent evolution, such as Brazil, champion in 2013. Today, the championship is not only the technical peak of the sport, but also a symbol of the global expansion of women’s handball.
