The minister of the (Supreme Federal Court), stated this Monday (8) that the Judiciary is still conservative, chauvinist and sexist.

“We increasingly need to have the awareness and sensitivity to know that we have women with remarkable legal knowledge, with a high reputation, and who want, can and should contribute to a truly democratic and egalitarian perspective in the Judiciary and the Federal Supreme Court”, stated the minister upon receiving the honor of the year.

At the celebration, she was reminded that she is currently the only woman on the STF and, throughout the history of republican Brazil, she is among the three female representatives. In addition to Cármen Lúcia, ministers Ellen Gracie and , now retired, also joined the court.

Despite celebrating a meeting made up mostly of women, with a “free press and committed companies”, the minister highlighted the injustices against women and the rise in femicides.

“On Justice Day, injustices against women in Brazil reached levels that are not just contrary to the law, they are inhumane, lack of civility, indignity,” said the minister.
“We need to take some actions, as a society, to put an end to this killing of women. It is no longer possible for us to continue watching women being murdered and raped,” he said.

“This year, there are almost 700 orphaned children and many of them have seen their fathers, their stepfathers, their mothers’ companions, mutilated or killed in front of them. This is, as I said, the denial of civilization. This is an act of barbarity.”

In a speech in which she tried to be positive for the recognition of women’s work, the minister also listed other injustices in female representation. She recalled that quotas were created in the 1960s for minorities, but women, who make up 52% ​​of the Brazilian electorate, are still poorly represented in Congress.

“We have the worst representation in the National Congress in terms of numbers. In terms of quantity, we are one of the worst representations in the Americas,” said the minister. She paraphrased the poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade in a comment on . “That girl continues to be murdered every day and in different ways.”

Carmén Lúcia also spoke about underrepresentation in technology, the theme of this year’s Todas 2 Awards, a partner of Sheet with Alandar consultancy. “We just carried out one of the audit phases of the electronic voting machines and, of the almost 140 proposals that were presented that year, there were only 13 women”, he said.

President of the (Superior Electoral Court) for the 2024-2026 biennium, the minister highlighted the need for a free press during next year’s elections and lamented fraud in gender quotas. In the tribute, she was recognized for her public career marked by the defense of democracy, equality and citizenship. “We need to continue together and, if there are many tears and many wounds to heal, it is urgent that we do this together”, he said.
