Honduras issues order against former president benefited from Trump’s pardon

The Honduran court issued an international arrest warrant against former president Juan Orlando Hernández, just weeks after he was .

The order was released this Monday by Honduran Attorney General Johel Antonio Zelaya Alvarez, who said he had called on the government and Interpol to comply with the court order.

According to Alvarez, the warrant is related to allegations of money laundering and fraud. In a message published on social media, he stated that the country is facing the lasting effects of corruption schemes and criminal networks that, according to him, have marked the institutional life of Honduras.

So far, there is no confirmation that Hernández has been located.

Hernández had been sentenced in 2024 by the United States Court to 45 years in prison for facilitating the shipment of hundreds of tons of cocaine to American territory, mainly from routes that pass through Honduras.

The jury in New York concluded that the activities took place since 2004, a period before the beginning of his term as president, which ran between 2014 and 2022.

The former president was extradited to the USA shortly after leaving office, when current president Xiomara Castro took power. At the end of November, however, Trump granted a pardon to Hernández and stated on his Truth Social network that the former head of state had been treated unfairly, an argument that, according to him, was supported by people he trusted.

Trump’s decision came amid the Honduran electoral dispute. The Republican sought to politically reinforce Nasry Asfura, a conservative candidate from the same party as Hernández.
