A strong one occurred on Monday, with the first estimates referring to a magnitude 7.6 earthquake, according to the Reuters agency. According to reports from international agencies and from reports on social media, the earthquake occurred shortly after 23:00 local time in the maritime area of Aomori Prefecture, and the focal depth was estimated to be 50 kilometers. The tremor, due to its intensity and characteristics, triggered a tsunami warning which, according to the authorities’ estimates, could reach up to three meters. Orders to immediately evacuate the affected area due to the warnings are also broadcast on Japanese television. A tsunami warning was issued for Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures. Dangerous tsunami waves from the earthquake are likely to occur within 1000 km of the epicenter along the coasts of Japan and Russia. A tsunami has already hit Aomori and Hokkaido.
