Kaja Kallas hits back at Washington: Your criticism of freedoms should be directed at Russia, not the European Union

While the United States warns in the new strategy that Europe will be unrecognizable in 20 years and is in danger of decay, Brussels is defending itself. The high representative of the EU, Kaja Kallas, declared that criticizing freedom in Europe is misguided, as real censorship reigns in Russia.

The EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Kaja Kallas, declared on Tuesday that criticism of freedoms on the continent should be directed elsewhere, “perhaps to Russia.” It reacted to the new US national security strategy, which Washington published last week and criticized Europe in several areas. TASR writes about it according to a Reuters report.

  • Kallasová responded to American criticism of freedoms in the EU.
  • The European Union represents freedom, she said before the European Parliament committee.
  • According to her, criticism of the fall of freedom should be aimed at Russia.

Kallasová: The European Union is the very essence of freedom

“Criticism regarding freedoms should be directed elsewhere. Perhaps to Russia, where dissent is prohibited, where there is no free media, where political opposition or Platform X is prohibited,” declared Kallasová in her speech before the European Parliament committee. “The European Union is the very essence of freedom,” added the head of European diplomacy.

In her own words, she perceives the American criticism as a “provocation”, but nevertheless she emphasized again that the United States remains Europe’s greatest ally.

The administration of US President Donald Trump released a new national security strategy on Friday. In it, she accused Europe of undermining political freedom and restricting freedom of expression. According to the US, the continent is threatened not only with economic decline, but also with the “much more threatening prospect of the disintegration of civilization”. If Europe continues on its current course, it is said to be “unrecognizable in 20 years or less”.
