Mário de Andrade Library: video shows thieves carrying stolen works

A video obtained by CNN Brazil shows the moment when two men leave the area of ​​the Mário de Andrade Library carrying part of the 13 works of art stolen on Sunday (7), in the center of São Paulo.

In the images, the suspects appear carrying the works inside a large black “bag”. One of them wears a hood and a blue coat. The two hold the material by the handles and walk quickly down the street..

Shortly after leaving the place, the duo heads to another street in the Center, where they parked the car used in the getaway. In another part of the recordings, a man appears carrying several works piled on his head, as he moves away from the crime scene.

The Civil Police of São Paulo de Felipe dos Santos Fernandes Quadra, suspected of participating in the robbery. The information was confirmed to CNN Brazil by the suspect’s lawyer, Glória Oliveira. According to her, the delegate responsible for the case has already sent the request to the judge on duty.

“He will not leave the police station until this temporary period is released. The arrest notice has already been made in the act and, in any case, he will undergo a custody hearing tomorrow”, he stated.

It was found that thirteen works were stolen from the site, eight engravings from the “Jazz” series by Henri Matissee five engravings by Candido Portinari, from the work “Menino de Engenho”.

The robbery took place on Sunday morning (7) at the Mário de Andrade Library, in the center of São Paulo. In addition to the arrest of the first suspect, the vehicle used in the escape was located, seized and sent for technical examination. Interpol was also contacted by São Paulo City Hall in an attempt to prevent the pieces from being sent abroad.
