Our Immaculate Lady: understand history in addition to a holiday this Monday (8)

This Monday (8) is marked by national holidays and celebrations in more than 200 municipalitiesacross the country. The celebration of Our Lady of Conceptionor Immaculate Conceptionrefers to the truth of faith that the Virgin Mary was designed without stain of original sin.

According to the dogma of the Catholic Church, no stain of sin affected Mary during her life, as she was blessed and chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus.

The Church recognizes that Maria era immaculate since its inception, but it took years of study for formal proclamation.

The proclamation of 1854

In a historical article, published by CNBB (National Confederation of Bishops of Brazil)the status of Immaculate Conception was officially proclaimed in December 8, 1854.

At the base of the Catholic Church, Mary is considered essential to the Christian faith, and this is based on four doctrines that define her, known as Marians. This dogma is one of the four recognized by the Church, along with divine motherhood, elevation to the kingdom of heaven and perpetual virginity.

The belief

Belief in the Immaculate Conception was already widespread before the official proclamation, according to biblical accounts.

In 1830, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré and requested that medals be made with the prayer: “O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you”.

The intention would have been reaffirmed years later, in 1858. During the new apparition, the Virgin Mary confirmed the dogmatic definition.
