Russian President Vladimir Putin declared on Tuesday that Russia will achieve the goals of the so-called of a special military operation – as the Russian authorities refer to the war against Ukraine – and “will bring it to its logical end.” This was reported by the news website Rádio Sloboda (RFE/RL), writes TASR. “We are trying to end (the war in Ukraine) and we are forced to use military force to do so. We will certainly bring this matter to its logical conclusion, thereby achieving the goals of the special military operation.” Putin said during a meeting of the Council for Civil Society and Human Rights.
RFE/RL reported that, based on Putin’s decree, the former director of the Gulag History Museum, Roman Romanov, was stripped of his membership in the Council for Civil Society and Human Rights. Romanov was dismissed from the position of director in January 2025. Russian independent media reported at the time that the decision was made after Romanov refused to censor an exhibition about Soviet repression. Romanov led this museum since 2012.
The Gulag History Museum announced the suspension of its operations in November 2024. It cited a violation of fire safety rules as the reason for its closure. Independent media added that the museum’s employees continued to work despite this: they went on expeditions, interviewed victims of repression and prepared for the publication of a book on the history of the gulags.
