Is the Derby of the Americas an official title?
Despite it being just a quarter-final stage, FIFA decided to reinforce the prestige of the competition after the launch of the new Club World Cup. Therefore, all matches in the tournament will now feature official ceremonies, including the presentation of trophies and medals to the winning team.
The duel between Flamengo and Cruz Azul became known as the “Classic of the Americas”, as it pits the current Libertadores champion and the CONCACAF Champions Cup title holder face to face.
In the previous season, Pachuca-MEX was the winner of the trophy, defeating Botafogo by a score of 3-0.
Out of curiosity:
FIFA prepared a trophy for each phase of the new World Cup (now called intercontinental)
The Derbi das Américas (Botafogo x Pachuca) will be worth a cup. Passing, Botafogo faces Al Ahly for another cup (FIFA Challenger Cup)
