Even though it has not yet repeated the success of the first film, the sequel “Five Nights At Freddy’s 2” It has already grossed more than R$100 million at the box office in its first few days, which may raise doubts among fans about the chance of more films being produced on the big screen.
In an exclusive interview with CNNthe film’s director, Emma Tammiexpressed confidence in carrying out more productions.
“I hope so. I think everyone hopes so,” she said, about a third film in the franchise being released.
“We’ll have to see how this one is received and then we’ll pay close attention to what people really want. We have ideas, of course. But this is a fan base that’s a big community, so we’ll also listen to what the community has to say.”
After three days in theaters, the first film, released in 2023, grossed US$130.6 million in cinemas around the world, with US$78 million in the United States alone, followed by US$10.8 million from Mexico, US$6.3 million from the United Kingdom, and R$3.9 million from Brazil.
Part of the success is definitely the credit of the franchise’s longtime fans. “Five Nights At Freddy’s” is an adaptation of the series of electronic games initially released in 2014, in which players take on the role of night security guards at the pizzeria “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza” and try to save themselves from attacks by the pizzeria’s animatronic characters who come to life at night.
“It’s really special to see that people who first played the game 10 years ago, who are now older, are still as excited as 10-year-olds who are discovering the franchise now and becoming huge fans. There’s something cross-generational about ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ that’s very rare. For me, who’s on the older side of that spectrum, the franchise taps into a nostalgia for those entertainment pizzerias I grew up going to — places that made me excited and also scared. I think it cuts across many generations: this mix of something fun, strange and also scary”, said the director.
Despite this, there is a complete desire to win new fans.
“I hope that anyone who enters the cinema without knowing anything will also enjoy it, because we have great performances, incredible animatronics and a truly electrifying experience”, said Tammi.
The film stars Josh Hutchersonwho returns to the role of Mike Schmidt. Completing the cast are names like Matthew Lillard (“Scooby Doo”), Elizabeth Lail (“You”), Piper Rubio (“Holly & Ivy”), McKenna Grace (“Ghostbusters”), Freddy Carter (“Shadow and Bone”), Wayne Knight (“Jurassic Park”), Skeet Ulrich (“Scream”) and Teo Briones (“Chucky”).
