General strike leads Air Europa to cancel flights and Iberia to reduce operations to Portugal

Air Europa canceled all of its 16 flights to and from Portugal, while Iberia reduced up to 75% of scheduled connections, following the general strike called against the reform of labor legislation. TAP expects to operate only a third of its flights during the joint CGTP and UGT strike.

Iberia confirmed this Tuesday to what will cancel 75% of your flights to and from Porto with several Spanish airports, while cancellation fee will be 50% for flights to and from Lisbon.

According to a statement from Air Europa, the company will suspend all its sixteen flights to and from Portugalall with origin and destination at Madrid-Barajas Airport, which had eight flights (four outbound and four return) to Lisbon and another eight to Porto.

Air Europa informed the affected passengers who can change their travel dates free of charge between December 9th and 18thchange your route, request a voucher or get a ticket refund.

Unions unite in solidarity

Four unions in the aviation sector issued a statement on the same day joint position of solidarity with Portuguese workers in the general strike on Thursday, having criticized the Government’s draft labor reform.

The executive president of TAP, Luis Rodriguesassured this Tuesday that the company is prepared for general strike scheduled for Thursday and plans to hold one third of the operationwith the main effort being to prevent passengers from being affected.

The general strike of December 11th was called by and by against the proposed revision of the Labor Code and will be the first joint shutdown of the two plants since June 2013when Portugal was under the intervention of the ‘troika’.

The changes foreseen in the Government’s proposal to reform labor legislation target several areas, such as parenting, dismissals, extension of contract terms and sectors that are covered by minimum services in the event of a strike.
