Haddad: approval of the persistent debtor’s PL is good news “for serious taxpayers”

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, said this Wednesday (10) that the approval of the persistent debtor’s bill is very good news for serious taxpayers. He spoke to journalists at the ministry’s entrance and said that the IRS has difficulty calculating the revenue impact of persistent debtors in the short term, but that there is an expectation of an increase in the medium term, especially for States.

“Our role is to organize the sectors of the economy with the fairest rules for everyone, especially those who participate in the sector and are not always able to come across fair rules”, he said. And he continued: “You have had disorganization in this sector for many years due to the presence, in these sectors, of taxpayers who are persistent debtors. They have used, until today, loopholes in the legislation to open and close companies, to use oranges, all with the aim of exploring a highly profitable economic activity if you don’t pay taxes.”

According to the minister, businesspeople from sectors that have persistent debtors asked the government for action since the beginning of the mandate. He also declared that in just one sector, tax evasion reaches R$28 billion, with more than half being debt owed to the States.

Haddad stated that, if it is proven that someone is a persistent debtor, with the new legislation, that person may have their company closed and be forced to leave the market.

“I believe this is very good news for serious taxpayers who want to stay in business, but who want fair and fair competitive practices”, he added.
