Many people make this common mistake when heating: It can cost you thousands of euros a year!

With the arrival of winter, most people automatically turn up the heat to make the home as warm and comfortable as possible. However, due to energy prices, it is important to know where the heat is actually leaking and how to avoid unnecessary waste of money. Experts warn that many households make the same mistakes, which significantly increase bills, often without real need.

Energy expert Jamie Burns tells the British newspaper Express that most people think they have a good understanding of heating, but a few small changes can save hundreds of euros a year. According to him knowing your own heating system significantly affects not only the comfort in the home, but also the final amount on the bill.

One of the biggest mistakes is heating rooms that are hardly used at all – such as chambers or corridors that we only pass through. By heating these spaces, the amount of heat that reaches the rooms where we actually stay is reduced. Therefore, experts recommend turning off the radiators or significantly reducing the temperature in these parts of the house or apartment.

Incorrectly set thermostats and the absence of adapted heating modes are also a problem. Constantly maintaining the same temperature in all rooms regardless of need and without time programs consumes much more energy than most people think. Just check which rooms really need to be heated, turn off the heating where it is not necessary and adjust the temperature when you are not at home or during the night.

Even with reasonable heating operation, heat often escapes through non-insulated openings and drafts. The most common places for heat to escape are mailboxes built into doors, chimneys, attic passages, as well as old or poorly sealed windows and doors. Even minimal interventions, such as sealing cracks or additional insulation, can significantly reduce consumption.

Burns concludes that every small optimization can make a big difference. It’s not about expensive renovations, but more reasonable use of existing systems. A few thoughtful steps can make this winter much more pleasant – and without additional financial burden.
