Corina Machado’s daughter will receive the award
The leader of the Venezuelan opposition, Maria Corina Machado, will not receive the Nobel Peace Prize in person at this Wednesday’s award ceremony in Oslo, according to Reuters, citing the director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute.
Corina, 58, was due to receive the award at a ceremony at Oslo City Hall, in the presence of King Harald, Queen Sonja and Latin American leaders.
To receive the prize, Corina would defy the decade-old travel ban imposed by her country’s authorities, after spending more than a year in hiding.
“Unfortunately, she is not in Norway and will not be on stage at Oslo City Hall at 1 pm, when the ceremony begins,” Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of the institute and permanent secretary of the body responsible for the award, told broadcaster NRK.
Asked where Corina is, Harpviken said he didn’t know.
