Paulinho da Força hopes that the vote on the project will “pacify the country”
The rapporteur of the proposal that reduces sentences for those convicted of attempted coup d’état, deputy Paulinho da Força (Solidariedade-SP), said in a press conference this Tuesday (9) that his proposal, if approved, will release all prisoners from January 8th. “With this text, all the people who were arrested will be released. The lawyers will have to ask the Supreme Court”, he stated. In relation to former president Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison, he stated that, “with the remission of sentences, it gives 2 years and 4 months”.
According to him, the report should also benefit people who are serving sentences with ankle bracelets and those who left Brazil. “The reduction I make is general, there is no distinction between this and that. So, I’m going to reduce it from the girl with the lipstick and to Bolsonaro too.”
In addition to the remission of sentences for house arrest and the use of ankle bracelets, the text determines the joint application of convictions for the crimes of coup d’état and violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, applying the greater penalty.
Paulinho da Força hopes that the vote on the project will pacify the country. “The people who committed some damage to property or committed a crime are already serving their sentences, they have already realized that you can’t play around with democracy,” he stated. “We have time to discuss other important things in Brazil, turn this page, go to next year’s elections discussing the country’s problems and not this issue of leaving prisoners or releasing them.”
