Trump says “Maduro’s days are numbered” and does not rule out invasion of Venezuela

In an interview with Politico, the US president reinforces the fight against drug trafficking and admits the possibility of military actions also in Mexico and Colombia, while the government faces criticism for attacks at sea

President Donald Trump said that Nicolás Maduro’s “days are numbered” in charge of Venezuela, amid rumors that the United States may launch ground attacks in the country.

In a long interview with the website PoliticoTrump did not rule out an American invasion of Venezuela and reinforced his desire to combat illegal drug trafficking that reaches the USA.

Trump has been talking about the possibility of land attacks for months, and the Pentagon has already carried out more than 20 attacks against vessels suspected of involvement in drug trafficking at sea.

He also suggested that he could attack other countries because of drug trafficking, in addition to Venezuela. When asked if he would consider similar action against Mexican or Colombian interests, Trump responded: “Of course.”

The Trump administration has come under pressure for these attacks on vessels, with some lawmakers saying there is no legal basis for these operations. Criticism increased after it emerged that in one of the incidents, a second attack killed two survivors at sea.
