Ready to proceed at any time within the next quarter provided that the US and the Europeans provide security guarantees for the process to take place, the president said, in statements to a journalist from the newspaper La Repubblica, during his visit to Rome. Zelensky also claimed that he wants an “energy truce” with Russia if Moscow commits to it and that within the week he is preparing to have contacts with European leaders, but also with the US at the level of National Security Advisers (NSA).
As Zelensky specifically stated, “if there are security guarantees, the elections can be held within the next 60 to 90 days” and claimed that he will ask the parliament to prepare the necessary legislative framework to make it possible to hold elections under martial law. These statements are the response of the President of Ukraine to statements made earlier by US President Donald Trump in Politico, in which he called on Zelensky to go ahead with elections, arguing that: “I believe that Ukraine should hold elections. They are using the war to not hold elections, but I believe that the Ukrainian people should have that choice. They talk about democracy, but it has reached the point where it is not a democracy anymore.”
The president of Ukraine, among other things, argued that the United States did not threaten to stop the weapons supply program during the peace talks.
