“Catastrophe” – this is the word Ishraga Mustafa Hamid uses to describe the current situation in Sudan. However, the activist and author quickly adds that this word is actually not enough to do justice to the situation. War has been raging in the East African country for more than two years, where the army under General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo – alias “Hemeti” – and his Rapid Support Forces (RSF) face each other. Together, the two took power in a coup in 2021, two years after the protests by the democracy movement, and then plunged the country into bloody war with their power struggle from 2023.
