“Unfortunately, during the extinguishing, one person was found dead,” the press office of the Russian Emergencies Ministry told the state-run Tass news agency.
The fire started in a market building in the Nevsky district, one day after the city was illuminated for Christmas. In fact, explosions are heard in the area.
According to a statement from the ministry, a highly flammable material inside the building caused the rapid spread of the fire, which covered almost 1,500 square meters.
In the same announcement, it is stated that 96 firefighters and 26 vehicles are continuing efforts to extinguish the fire in the market.
