The president of , (Republicanos-PB), said that Brazilian institutions must be more fair and supportive, based on the principles of human rights and human dignity. Motta spoke at the launch ceremony of the book “Private Votes at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights”, by Rodrigo Mudrovitsch. The work, a publication by Edições Câmara, is dedicated to a detailed examination of the votes that the author cast while serving as judge at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, between the years 2022 and 2024. The president of the Federal Supreme Court (), , participated in the launch.

“This work is essential, because it touches on the backbone of the Democratic Rule of Law. Among the issues faced – which involve cases from Colombia, Paraguay, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru and Ecuador – we find: judicial independence and democracy; protection of indigenous peoples; confronting crimes against humanity; equality and non-discrimination; gender violence; protection of family and home and defense of people who work to promote human rights”, said Motta.

According to him, the Inter-American System has responded to structural problems in a region still marked by persistent inequalities and human rights violations.

Pluralism

The President of the Supreme Court, Edson Fachin, stated that, as long as there is poverty and marginalization, there is a constitutional duty of action on the part of legislators and the Executive. For Fachin, this is only possible in plural and democratic coexistence in society. “It is not about renouncing differences, but living with differences in peace, because it is in pluralism that democracy finds its meaning”, said the judge.

The author of the book, Rodrigo Mudrovitsch, stated that the votes of the judges of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights contribute to deepening and developing the concepts in the sentences, clarifying the content of the obligations imposed on the states and signaling possible advances in future sentences.

“We are not judging mere legal theses. What lies behind are victims, their suffering, their stories that bear the mark of justice denied, because what they are looking for is what they cannot achieve in the courts of their country, and looking for some remedy with some sentence that comes 20, 30, 40 years after the facts. Because the Inter-American Court of Human Rights is the last frontier that these people face to obtain some form of reparation”, said Mudrovitsch.
