Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) will not support any solution to support additional military spending for Ukraine at the next European Council. On Thursday, he said this during the Question Hour in the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic, saying that the Slovak government is a solidary player in humanitarian aid to Ukraine in many areas and is also a supporter of its entry into the European Union (EU).
„I cannot support and will not under any pressure support any solution to support Ukraine’s military expenditures in which the Slovak Republic should participate. At the same time, I respect the sovereign right of each member state of the European Union to adopt a different solution on a voluntary basis,” said Fico.
According to him, the conflict in Ukraine has no military solution, while the EU’s strategy for this conflict is incorrect and ineffective. He assessed that the continuation of the war is senseless killing without strengthening the position of Ukraine in the case of peace negotiations. Therefore, it supports the peace initiatives and efforts to end this war by US President Donald Trump.
During Prime Minister Robert Fico’s statement, a member of the National People’s Republic of Slovakia and chairman of the Slovak Movement Igor Matovič appeared behind him in a sweatshirt with the inscription “Enough was Fico”. UFico was interrupted in the middle of a sentence by opposition MP Martin Dubéci. “Mr. MP… Mr. Prime Minister…” he tried to draw attention to the situation. “I’m interrupting Question Time for five minutes. I’m sorry, Mr. Prime Minister, but my colleague is standing behind you,” explained his decision.
Screams immediately began to be heard from the plenum asking why Matovič could not stand there and that they could sit wherever they wanted. “Mr. Matovič, can I ask you to move on from Mr. Prime Minister. It is not entirely polite to stand behind a person’s back. So I will ask you to leave the place,” Dubéci spoke up again.
That’s when other MPs began to approach Matovič. “But I’m just standing here. I’m hard of hearing,” declared Matovič. While other deputies tried to persuade Matovič to leave the place, Prime Minister Robert Fico went to sit down. After 5 minutes, Matovič left the place.
