Commerce sales grow 0.5% in October, says IBGE

Sector accumulates an increase of 1.7% in 12 months; extended retail trade rose 1.1% in the month

Retail sales grew 0.5% in October compared to September, in the seasonally adjusted series. The result was above the median of the projections obtained by the Poder360which indicated an increase of 0.1% in the month. The (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) released the result this Thursday (Dec 11, 2025). Here is the report (PDF – 1 MB).

Compared to October 2024, in the non-seasonally adjusted series, retail sales grew 1.1%. The accumulated result for the year reached 1.5%. In 12 months, the sector increased by 1.7%.

IBGE identified positive rates in 7 of the 8 activities surveyed. They are:

  • office, IT and communication equipment and material (3.2%);
  • fuels and lubricants (1.4%);
  • furniture and household appliances (1.0%);
  • books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (0.6%);
  • other articles for personal and domestic use (0.4%);
  • pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (0.3%);
  • hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, drinks and tobacco (0.1%).

The only activity that recorded a drop from September to October was fabric, clothing and footwear (-0.3%).

EXPANDED RETAIL TRADE

Extended retail trade includes:

  • vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces;
  • construction material.

According to IBGE, expanded retail sales rose 1.1% in October compared to September. Vehicles, musts, parts and pieces increased by 3% in the month. Sales of construction materials rose 0.6%.

The accumulated figure for expanded retail trade in the year was negative (-0.3%), while in 12 months it remained stable.
