Criticism of the Act on Penitents: According to the opposition, the amendment to the Criminal Code ensures impunity

The approved amendment to the Criminal Code, which also changes the Criminal Code in the area of the so-called penitents, solves the problems of the “mafia”. It is supposed to guarantee impunity for people who commit serious crimes. The coalition is rapidly passing laws for the corrupt and the people who are robbing this country. After the amendment of the Criminal Code was approved by the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic, this was announced by the representatives of the opposition parties. Their chanting and whistling during the vote was justified by some as an “emergency”.

“Everything that happened in this election period was leading to this moment from Mr. Gašpar’s point of view. Mr. Gašpar wanted to enforce a ‘mafia clause’ in this law, an amendment that would allow people who commit serious crimes, organized crime, to go unpunished,” Deputy Speaker of Parliament Martin Dubéci (PS) told journalists. The opposition has repeated several times that the amendment is intended to help the indicted vice-chairman of the NR SR Tibor Gašpar (Smer-SD).

According to Dubéci, there are moments when you have to speak up. “I would call it a small emergency that we wanted to sound out by having to say out loud that it was not. This is all the result of the actions of the coalition government, which knew very well that it was pushing the saw, very well that it was breaking all parliamentary norms.” he added. According to him, the coalition “baptized” the whole thing by including the vetoed law on changing the Whistleblower Protection Office (ÚOO) to a new office. The sentence will be discussed during Thursday night.

“This is normally the night of a mafia coup, normally, literally and figuratively, what the government coalition is performing here. Laws are not made here for the people to help the people, here laws are made for the mafias, the corrupt and the people who are robbing this country and want to bring the mafia here and control us in this way.” declared the head of SaS, Branislav Gröhling.

“There are limits that we can tolerate and there are limits that already exceed our tolerance, and tonight will certainly go down in the history of the Slovak Republic in terms of what the government coalition can do. Today, the government coalition rolled out the red carpet for the mafia, for organized crime, and these people will shoot champagne today.” stated KDH leader Milan Majerský.

Deputies from the Slovakia club – For the people, the change regarding the institute of cooperating accused – the so-called they criticized penitents. They see it as an amnesty for Tibor Gašpar (Smer-SD). “We used all the means we have as the opposition to disrupt it for them, so that we don’t allow Slovakia to be hijacked by Moscow,” stated the head of the parliamentary club, Michal Šipoš.

On Thursday evening, the Parliament approved the amendment to the Criminal Code, which also includes several changes that were added to the proposal on Thursday morning as part of committee deliberations. The Institute of Cooperating Accused – the so-called penitents. Parliament discussed the amendment in abbreviated legislative proceedings. Subsequently, the vetoed law on the Office for the Protection of Victims of Crimes and Whistleblowers of Anti-Social Activities, which was returned to the Parliament by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini only a few hours earlier, was included in the discussion.
